Choose the right hair type
You probably already know there are various types of hair. Depending on your budget, you can either opt for the highest quality items on the market – 100% Virgin, unprocessed hair, or choose an alternative more suitable to your pocket – Remy.
Both are natural, only Virgin is chemically unprocessed, making it much higher quality, and therefore more expensive. But if your budget is constrained, Remy hair is a perfectly acceptable alternative as well.
There is always the option of choosing hair which is not natural (synthetic), but we strongly advise against it, since you most definitely will not be satisfied with the end result. People love natural hair and for a good reason!
Choose the wig type
So there are 5 main types of wigs you can make: lace frontal, 360 lace frontal, closure, partial/half and full regular.
Lace frontal wigs are maybe the most popular ones since they give the appearance of a natural hairline and offer various options for parting your hair. 360 lace frontal is similar, only it has lace all over the perimeter and sometimes even at the center. This allows you to wear it in a ponytail.
Closure wigs are lace or silk-based small pieces of hair that can lay flat on your hair.
Partial/half wigs allow some of your hair to be left out while full regular wigs are the most standard type of wig, easiest to wear.
Tools to make a wig
You actually do not need that many tools to make a wig on your own, and you can find them at any shop that sells wigs.
Essential tools that you would need are a tripod stand, mannequin head or blockhead (like a real head), hair, wig cap, elastic band, cotton ribbons, small nails, spray bottle, needle thread (cotton or nylon) or head glue, measuring tape, scissors, hair heckle and drawing mats (optional).
The construction process
Step 1: Measure your head
First, flatten your hair back. Then use a measuring tape to measure your head around the hairline, down the center top of your head and from one ear to another.
Step 2: Build the foundation
Transfer your measurements to a mannequin/ blockhead. Line cotton ribbons as flat as possible along the perimeter of your wig line and gently hammer it using small nails. Moisten strips of cotton lace with a spray bottle and drape them over the wig block, pin the lace in place and stitch it to the ribbon.
Try on the foundation, to make sure it fits. If it doesn´t, go back and make appropriate adjustments. When it fits perfectly, trim off any excessive lace.
Make sure the foundation is not bulky since it gives the appearance of fake hair.
Step 3: Prepare the hair
Run the hair through a hair heckle, a metal plate of rows of pointed needles, to detangle, straighten and sort it. To keep hair straight and organized, use drawing mats.
Measure and cut the extensions to fit the circumference of the wig cap, while securing them down from back to front. They can be secured with a needle and thread or hair glue.
Step 4: Making the wig
First, sew the wig under the edge of the cap so it could be worn in a high ponytail. Start knotting the wig onto the lace from the bottom of the neckline. Work your way along the back, and then move to the sides. Afterward, work your way over the crown of the head.
Once you reach the crown of the wig, tie the strands off evenly in six separate directions.
Next, turn the wig inside out and stitch the hair along the inside edge of the ribbons, to prevent them from showing the front. Make sure to secure it properly.
Step 5: Style it
After all the parts are sewn into place, part the wig as you would normally do and cut it into a style of your choice.
If you want to color the hair, you should do it before making the wig. Styling is also a great way to freshen things up from time to time.
Step 6: Try it on
The moment you have been waiting for – see how it fits!
If anything looks off, return the wig to the block and readjust it.
Et voilà! Now you have a fabulous item, that will make you look amazing every day and for which you did not need to spend a fortune on.
Now that you are an expert, you can make wigs of different colors, length, and style. This can give you a wider choice of looks that you can rock, depending on how you feel, so you do not get bored with just one wig.
